Reviewed by Mom of three on 09-13-2008 I am so incredibly surprised by the comments on this washer. I had had mine for about 4 years and it rocks. I have never had mold or any other problem. My clothes dont twist any more than a regular washer I have a top loader- and I also love the hand wash feature really saved on the dry cleaning brand. I feel bad for getting one of the awesome machines- I wonder what happened. It is strange how mine would be fine- and so many would have problems. I dont air mine out or bleach it or anything. I had a repair guy come out today to assure me that there was not any mold in it that I couldn't see- and he said that mine was one of the first washers that ever looked fine. i feel very lucky to have gotten one of the good machines- I bought mine at Home Depot in Eugene OR. Reviewed by Fran on 08/09/2008 I was shocked to buy a Maytag washer to find it the worst piece of !?*# I own. The mildew smell is killing my allergies and I am not sure what to do. I tried bleech and the product on the market for this problem and nothing worked. The machine is only 2 years old. I called a repair person to check the machine and he said there was nothing he could to do help. I am discouraged by the multiple reports that I have read about this machine and the disconcern from the Maytag company. No wonder the Maytag repair man is bored, he CAN NOT fix the machine, so he doesn't even bother to try. Rating should be 0 for very poor. It is not surprising that Maytag is owned by Whirpool, they couldn't care less about helping consumers either. Rating:
Reviewed by Allan on 06-28-2008 I cannot believe that Maytag would continue to sell this piece of garbage. I've had this washer less than two years and have spent enough on parts to buy two regular washers. If you ask for assistance from Maytag it will cost you an arm and a leg if you can find somebody that will actually work on it. Never again Maytag will I purchase your products and tell everyone that I know that you don't care about your consumers. Rating:
Reviewed by Darcy on 04-22-2008 Worse than poor rating. Mine is only 2 years old and it is going to the county dump. Mildew smell on all clothes that caused a skin fungus that is difficult to treat. Sounds like world war 3 when it spins. Plastic rim is breaking off in chunks, ties clothes in knots and throws my back out when I go to grab one piece to put in dryer, I lift up entire load because it is so knotted, there goes the back. Will not spin due to unbalanced load, have to wring clothes out by hand. Maytag has left me out to dry, just like my sopped clothes that are decorating my backyard. I paid a lot of money for this peice of junk. Maytag repair companys won't even service "oh you have one of THOSE, I'm sorry maam, we don't work on the FAVs. Never EVER EVER another Maytag product, after how they have taken our money instead of owning up to the fact that they created a monster of a machine. We call it the schredder, because on top of everthing else it rips clothing, pulls buttons off and twists the clothes into sausages. Rating:
Reviewed by MR on 03-31-2008 WOW! I can't believe what I'm reading. I bought a Maytag Neptune TL washer, model # FAV6800AWW, back in August of 2004 and have NEVER had a problem with it. It is the best washer I have owned and I have owned other name brand high-end washers. After reading these reviews it appears that I must have been awfully lucky and purchased the only good one they made. I don't have the mildew problem sited in other reviews and I don't bleach the tub or let it air dry either. I have had other washers tangle clothes too, but it's no big deal. I did notice that if I overfill the washer a bit, the tangling is worse. Cleans my clothes beautifully. I don't have to pre-treat stains like I did with other washers. I just add some Oxy Clean, HE detergent, set the Pre-soak and Stain Treat features and my clothes come out stain free. I use the cold/cold water setting on 99% of my loads too. Love the Hand Wash cycle which saves on my dry cleaning bill. I have not had any problems doing very small loads either. I've even washed one shirt without any problems. No problem with the spin cycles. I will put it on an extra spin if I have an extra large load of towels though. I have never had the washer go off balance. So sorry to hear that I got the one gem out of all the other lemons. Rating:
Reviewed by O. Fisher on 12-24-2007 The design quality of this washer and lack of the manufacturer to issue a fix / recall / substitution makes me wonder what it would take to get a Class Action Lawsuit initiated against the company. There are three major flaws in the design of this top loading washer in order they are: 1) tumbling action, 2) clothes softener dispenser, and 3) mildew growth(?) in lower tank. 1) The way the machine currently tumbles clothes leaves them in a combined and fairly tight knot, putting sufficient stress on the fibers to sometimes cause tears. A change in design of the tumblers with a series of reversing actions would probably solve or minimized this problem, but Maytag (now Whirlpool) obviously does not care to address. 2) The fabric softener dispenser tends not to completely empty. I have tried further dilution of the softener to aid and it does help but does not alleviate the problem. Therefore the dispenser needs to be wiped out frequently. 3) I put a question mark beside the mildew growth because I cannot prove this is the problem. What I do know is that after removal of clothes from this dryer and drying them, they have a musty smell. Using my previous top loading agitator style washer the clothes would exit the dryer with the fresh smell of the fabric softener, no longer. My only fix is to put 1/8 cup of chlorine bleach in a gallon of water and after removal of the last load to pour it into the tank and leave it. Before the next wash load I run the washer through a rinse cycle. Doing this solves the musty odor problem. Rating:
Reviewed by Jo on 12/11/2007 Yes, THIS IS THE WORST APPLIANCE I EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! The drying cabinet I love, the dishwasher does well, the Wide by Side refrigerator is great - but this SUCKS!! I did not want to bend by using a front loader, so we purchased this. Well, I have to get practically in the machine to get to the bottom to pick up the VERY HEAVY BECAUSE THEY ARE WET CLOTHES! Most of the time, I have to call my husband to untie the knots of the heavy wet clothing! The TIME AND ENERGY WE WASTE RUNNING THE SPIN CYCLES OVER AND OVER AGAIN NEGATES THE ENERGY STAR SAVINGS. That's fraud! Consumer Reports recommended this sucker! Other sites recommended this machine. So that's where the mildew smell comes from? It also discolors in spots some clothes as though you added bleach and you didn't! Well, I'm elected public official fron NYC born and raised in Brooklyn. The last thing you do is get a Brooklyn girl mad. I'm going after the CEO's now and putting a newsletter out to my constituents to read this website an do not purchase this machine! Today, we are waiting for service - again. We have an extended warranty until 2010, but I think I'm going to put the machine on the curb anyway! Rating:
Reviewed by liz on 09-13-2007 yeah, whats with the mildew smell? I was all excited when I bought my house to have a 'brand new' MAYTAG washer that had only been used a few times before the sale. Here I am seven months later hand wringing the water out of my clothes! DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE, the commercials lie! As a single mom I do not have the money to replace it, nor do I have the time to chase Maytag about the problem, the customer service rep where the machine was perchased won't help at all as the machine is out of warrenty! Reviewed by Anna on 06/21/2007 on 06-24-2007 I am in total agreement with the other reviews listed here. What a travesty..... I think my hands are tied..... I cannot get anyone to answer my cries about this machine...... I would like to put it out on the curb...... I am sick of the clothes being tangled, having to fill the washer about half way with clothes or else the balance goes off. The mildew smell is really something, I am having to not only babysit this particular washer, but am also washing it with bleach one day, and then vinegar the next time to keep the mildew odor to a minimum - not getting rid of it, mind you, just keeping it to a minimum....... I have a daughter with special needs, and have been in situations where the venue we are visiting is not wheelchair accessible, and have told the people in charge that it makes me sick to know that it is illegal to be in a wheelchair in the year 2007 - and I cannot believe that the maytag company can rip people off to this degree, and it is not ille gal!!!! Please trust the people who have written these negative reviews, and DO NOT PURCHASE A MAYTAG NEPTUNE TL WASHER MODEL# FAV6800AWW . Rating:
Reviewed by Yvonne on 06/12/2007 A true lemon and I have been haveing "war time" discussions with Whirlpool and Maytag for the last 9 months! I have finally gone to the BBB in Michigan for help. Whirlpool refuses to replace this lemon and has called a Maytag Dependibility Service Provider to install another new clutch and pulley (replaced at age 13 months) But there is no repair for this demon of design ! It should be recalled for mold, mildew, roping and tangling -- One cannot do a smaller load than 7 pounds but this is not told to the consumer! This defeats the water saver. , One cannot do a delicate or hand wash load!!!!!I am disgkusted with the attitukde of this company. Whirlpool and Maytag did not respond until i contacted BBB!!!! Reviewed by Bryan R from Gilbert on 12-18-2006 Believe the other negative reviews - Do NOT buy this machine. First off, I also should mention that it does tie your clothes in knots. Especially bed sheets or other large items. Secondly, it does only a so-so job at actually cleaning clothes, no better than other cheaper washers I've used. To get those so-so results, you have to turn up the setting to get a decent wash, which throws out some of the alleged savings you have in water costs, etc. Finally, the REAL DEAL breaker: The FAV6800AWW has a design flaw that screws up the spin cycle. In the first year or so I didn't notice any problem with this, but over time the bowl bounced around more and more, until the washer became practically unusable. At that stage, I could've called a repairman, but I decided to crack open the front of the washer (a pain to do) to see what was up. I quickly figured out the problem: worn-down rubber connections (I think they're called support struts) at the bottom of the shocks that hold up the stainless steel drum. Details: There are two shocks in the front of the washer that appear to suspend the stainless steel tub. The bottom of these shocks are attached to the steel frame with bolts, but they have 1/2"-3/4" thick, 1" diameter rubber washers at the base of the shock to help absorb some lateral motion caused by slight imbalances. Over time, the rubber washer wears out and softens up, and the bowl starts to have more horizontal "play", especially during the spin cycle, which leads to imbalance shutdowns and "dc" error codes. Try this out if your washer has the spin problem (and you don't care about warranty issues): (Of course, unplug the washer to be 100% safe before doing anything.) Tip up the front of the washer and carefully unlatch the bottom two steel clips with a flat-head screwdriver. Then slightly lift open the front panel of the washer from the floor (don't pull too hard or far - you'll break screws at the top). You'll see the two 1" diameter shocks that hold up the bowl, one on each side of the washer. Put your hand in under the lid and move the shock (and bowl) around. You'll see how the bowl moves quite easily and that the black washers at the bottom are soft and don't do enough to resist the movement. What engineers thought this two rubber washer stabilization design was going to hold up for more than a year? Why only z-axis (up/down) shock support? Why no lateral spring support? This was a $1000 washing machine - where's the quality in the design? If I choose to get mine professionally fixed, it will be three weeks before a repairman 1) comes out to verify the problem, 2) gets the parts (10 business day lead time), and 3) then comes back to fix it. Then it'll work for a few months until the problem starts up again. Rinse, wash, repeat (bad pun here). What to do... If you just bought this dog of a washer, TAKE IT BACK FOR A REFUND WHILE YOU STILL CAN. (Also be sure to read reviews online before buying your next one. Doing that would've saved me this huge mistake.) If you can't take it back and you haven't had problems yet, beware - and have those quarters ready for a trip to the laundromat. Again - BELIEVE THESE BAD REVIEWS and get another washer. (Legal Disclaimer: Take this information for what it's worth. I'm not a certified technician, so don't hurt yourself or screw up your warranty coverage following my advice, and then blame me. Follow my advice at your own risk.) Rating:
Reviewed by Disa Poin Ted on 11-20-2006 What a joke! This machine not only twists and knots clothing, but it leaves a nasty mildew odor in the clothing which becomes worse with time. Maytag will leave you hanging, telling you to run bleach through the washer to rid the smell and to leave the lid open when not in use. Be aware that this model included in a lawsuit in Canada. Reviewed by RSP- Minneapolis MN on 07-31-2006 DON'T be Fooled! Maytag is badvertising by keeping this machine out there. I was fooled by the brandmarking of this company. The dryer has been fine, but the washer has been a HUGE and continual frustration. The features list; "...superior cleaning, gentle on clothes. No Agitator - Two tumblers gently lift and submerge clothes, sparing wear and tear." While there may be no agitator, the clothes come out mangled and it does not matter what cycle or setting is used. Another "feature": "High Efficiency -Saves up to $165 every year in water & energy." While this may have been the case for the tests that Maytag did, in real life it is far from the truth. Maybe if I did not have to run loads a second time or restart the machine every load to finish the bleepin' Spin cycle! "Easy-To-Use LED Touch-Pad Controls" - Great, at least I won't get Carpal Tunnel from having to constantly reset this horrid machine. We will have a Maytag repair person visit for the 4th time in the last year ... I want my money refunded so I can buy a machine that works! Rating:

We called Maytag to report this and they told us the earliest day they can send technician over is on this coming Tuesday. What can we do, we can only leave our wet clothes there and do nothing.
