Reviewed by Roland Mahoney on 07-17-2006 In desperation, I finally broke down and bought this machine in the middle of a 6 day, 97 degree Canadian heat wave. Passed by a stack of them 2 days in a row at Costco - watching the pile dwindle. On the third day I decided to but it - there was only one left. The checkout guy told me he was looking for that one - a customer in the store had driven almost 100 miles to pick it up. Said I could sell it in the parking lot for 100 bucks more! I took it home and set it up - comes with a good window venting system for patio doors, but not windows - still had to fill in the gap with a piece of cardboard. The huge hoses are definitely an eyesore, so put this thing in an inconspicuous place, or find a window with a low sill (It looks like the Lost In Space robot is breaking out of your house) I turned it on an felt the cooler oscillating air immediately, but more impressively noticed the extremely warm exhaust hose pumping the hot air, out of the room. The temperature indicator is a handy devise and although the manual is somewhat indecisive and muttled, the unit brought the upstairs temperature down from 87 to 78 degrees in a couple of hours without emptying a water catching device (Danby's new technology does not require this) - another plus. Seems well-built and comes with a seperate dehumidifier tank on bogey wheels. Overall, a good product for the money. CAN$499. Rating:
Reviewed by Kevin Johnson on 06-20-2006 As much as I am pleased with the performance of this unit, I do have some gripes. a) The user settable memory chip is not the type that retains memory in a power failure condition. Those chips are available and hardly likely to impact cost. b) The LCD unit BLUE user panel is very difficult to read, and it's obvious why they choose blue. But if you're an older person like me, bending over to try to discren the icons is difficult and the icons are too small. c) The manual is complete, but the instructions are not easily absorbed, for the operating of the unit. I think the manual should be re-done with input from some users. The device seems well made otherwise. heck the Costco price was RIGHT! Rating:
