Reviewed by John in Covina on 09-22-2008Audiophile on a Shoestring Budget! These Yamaha NS-555 floor standing tower style speakers are the little brothers to the NS-777 which have larger woofers. They're picking up almost cult status for those on a limited budget. Listed as Home Theater speakers these are very fine audio speakers too. I have them as front / mains in a 7.1 surround sound system powered by the Yamaha RXV-663 Home Theater receiver. Pound for pound and dollar for dollar these NS-555's are one of the best values in audio speakers you can find. Yamaha has made some excellent speakers previously and is noted for producing excellent studio as well as music hall speakers, their musical instruments are in great demand so they seem to have a handle on the idea of what sounds good. Using my NS-555's for some CD listening in 2 channel un-enhanced stereo in the Disc Listening selection on the amp either 'straight' or 'pure direct' has been delightful because I have been able to identify 2 significant steps of improvements in sound so far. Like fine speakers from the custom shops and big names the NS-555's do break in and become more and more smooth, musical but retaining a great precise sound. They are ported in the back so placement in relation to the walls will affect the bass response significantly. This maybe why some are saying it's a little shy on the bass, I can say in my set up they aren't bass shy at all. Working the volume up to a fairly loud level the volume was listed as 0db on the amp at 90 minutes listenin g time the first shift in a smoother sound came about and again at about 40 hours another break in step towards greater smoothness. The general word is at least 100 hours for total break in, so they may continue to improve, which would be swell as they are sounding great now. In home theater mode they excel with my Oppo 983 DVD player and also cd player they are top notch. They have a superb gloss piano finish since Yamaha knows a thing or two about pianos. Fit and finish seems just top notch. The are fairly weighty at about 43 pounds each and some truly sturdy feeling cabinetry. I say to anyone that they're one heck of a value. For anyone who is looking for an excellent pair of floorstanding speakers at a very, very reasonable price (and I am sure that is a whole lot of people) the NS-555's is one of the best values anywhere in the world of AV! For anyone who is looking for a great pair of speakers for both music and movies at any price, the NS-555's are some of the best sounding speakers anywhere in the world of AV! The finish and build quality of these speakers is world class. Internally wired with Monster Cable, Bi-wire/amp and Banana plug ready these speakers are very, very good. How good, with out going into too much detail? Well let me tell you...I had narrowed my search down to two pairs of speakers. A $700 a pair Polks which had 5 drivers but were going to be rather large for my medium small living area. Also in the running, were a pair of $1900 a pair Martin Logan's (yes Martin Logans!) which I was leaning toward because the size was not too menacing. Also the ML's were top notch on two channel music. But then there was the "..Just how much trouble would I get in with my wife.", factor! I would have to secretly save the money and then buy them with a nice lie attached. I know that some of you know what I am talking about! Thank goodness that none of that had to happen. Instead my wife went with me to buy them and thought they sounded great too. And because the absolutley drop dead gorgeous black piano finish looked so good, she couldn't help but think about how nice they would look against the new hardwood floors that I laid down during the winter. This was no doubt the easiest AV purchase I have ever made that involved the Mrs. So in closing I know you are wondering...'Do the NS-555's sound as good as a pair of $1900 Martin Logans?.....N o t q u i t e! But almost. The real question is do the Martin Logans sound $1700 better than the pair of NS-555's?....No friggin way!!!! As I have said before, people with deep pockets who read the Absolute Sound may never even look at the NS-555's, much less listen to them. But hey let me assure you that anyone who has the fortune of buying a pair of these great all-time bargains will be listening to music and movies with all the joy and pleasure of those who spent a great deal more. I do suggest that you bi-wire the speakers, the difference is very noticable. A high current amp or reviever is a must to get the most out of these very good sounding speakers. When installing the nice feet that come supplied with the NS-555's, turn the speaker upside down right out of the box on soft carpet so you don't dare scratch the finish. Enjoy!!!
