Reviewed by Mike G on 02-21-2005 I took delivery of my Hitachi 55HDX61 in late October and after four months I can't recommend its purchase. While the picture quality is, at times, outstanding, the unit does have a persistent problem that is difficult to demonstrate to a repairman. At random times the screen refuses to display a picture. This outage, which occurs five or six times a week, usually lasts three to five seconds. Unless you have a TV repairman onsite with their scopes attached, it will be impossible to trap the problem. While the running lights are green the screen is totally black while the sound continues. I'm a TiVo user and when I back up broadcast, what was absence during the outage can be displayed. In other words, the signal is coming through but the 55HDX61 has business else where. One outage lasted for a full week. This is when the nightmare for service began. The boutique where I purchased the Plasma told me my only option was to call the Hitachi service number. Hitachi customer service gave me two local repair companies to call. The earliest appointment I could schedule was thirty days out. I had the selling company intervene and a repairman was finally scheduled for a week later. The repair company informed me that I would have to remove the screen from the wall before the technician could work on it. This unit is not serviceable from the front. This is a large one hundred plus pound device that took three people to lift. By the time the technician arrived the screen had already 'healed' itself and no trouble was found. While the technician did try to do some diagnostic work on the screen, it was apparent that unless it was suspended in mid-air, the unit is extremely difficult to service due to its weight and location of switches. Switches are on the bottom of the unit and access panels are on the back. Imagine the unit leaning upright against a wall while trying to access the on/off button that's on the bottom of the screen that's resting on the floor. Random outages still occur and I hold my breath each time they happen. If I'm lucky, it will permanently shut itself down before the warranty expires and the problem can be finally fixed. Rating:
