Reviewed by Steve Franklin on 02-09-2004 I've only had this for about a week and I'm still getting used to it. For now I'm running off of the DVD drive on my computer - soon to be
replaced with a Niro 1.1 surround system - but even with that and no 5.1 sound yet, this unit is quite exceptional. The beauty of the display is only limited by that of the source material. I just watched Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon last night and you could literally use it as video wallpaper with the sound turned off. I played an old commercially produced VHS tape through my VCR - there are a large number of jacks on the back and front of the control unit for everything from video games to computer input to cable sources - and the there was absolutely no comparison. I can only imagine what HDTV would look like through a separate HDTV tuner - there is none built-in to this unit.
The on-board sound is disappointing, but who would seriously consider buying a ~4300 TV and not get an equally advanced sound system?
For those who like to tweak things, the remote control provides access to everything from red, green, and blue color controls to a setting that
restores the 24 fps frame rate of DVDs taken from films and syncs it with the monitor.
I have seen no sign of LCD blurring at all, even with the above mentioned fast action martial arts film, and the brightness and contrast are
excellent. The picture actually shows more contrast in a lighted room than in a darkened one, apparently due to the TFT technology.
The control unit is ventilated at the top, so although it's the size of a VCR, it needs to be placed at the top of a stack of equipment and not in the
middle, and its silver coloring doesn't match most black components very well, though it does match my aluminum computer case.
Overall, this is a great unit, especially at a web price of $4300 or less. Just be careful of who you deal with. The shipping from the folks I chose
took 3 weeks on this "in stock" item. Rating:
