I bought my machine about 3 years ago. Before the year was up I had to mail it back to Sony for repairs as it seem to have power issues and disc changer problem. Then after 18 more months it started acting up again and would not power on. I took it apart as I had a rental DVD inside and decided to clean it out. The unit actually seemed very cold and we keep our house on the cool side. For whatever crazy reason and I needed to retrieve the DVD, I took a hair dryer to it and either by coincidence or just cause the unit powered up. That was about 2 months ago, but alas it did it again about a month ago. The heat seems to help again. Today the same thing happened and no luck with the heat or air flow. The unit just died. So much for Sony. After problems with a short lived Sony DVD recorder and this unit my ‘always Sony’ buying habits have changed. The last TV I bought for Christmas was a Samsung and an extra DVD player was RCA. Sometimes the only way to send a message to a company that does not listen to their customer is to stop being their customers.

The problem with the unit is that it overheats due to a defective transistor in the unit. After you run the unit for a couple of minutes, feel the bottom of the unit on the right hand side and you will notice it is very hot. This is because of the transistor and the fan in the back is not powerful enough to pull the heat out. My family had the DAV-FC8 for a little over a year before the typical problems started happening. A DVD would freeze after playing for about 10-15 minutes, loss of remote control use, the standby light would blink and take a minute to power off, etc etc. Even if you just played the radio! I called Sony and they blamed the problems on poor ventilation which was nonsense. Some research led to the transistor problem, which apprently will cost more than $150 to fix. That was not acceptable to me since spending $500 for a Sony brand unit to fail after a year was ridiculous. I came up with a cheap fix that has worked so far if you don't want to spend the $150+ to get the unit fixed (especially if the warranty is up like ours was). I first placed 2 1x1 computer (northbridge) heat sinks directly onto the bottom of the unit where the heat was. The heatsinks were applied using thermal tape that came with them. This instantly solved the DVD freezing problem and the power-off standby would blink 2-3 times then shut off. The heatsinks were helping draw heat out of the bottom of the unit, lessening the heat load on the system. I ended up adding 4 ThermalTake RAM heatsinks in addition to help take further heat stress of the unit. I had to raise the unit up a little with some wood because the RAM heat sinks would brush the bottom of the stand, but that is no big deal. Since I have done this (several months ago), we have had no problems with DVD freezing, Standby lights, etc. You can get the heatsinks at any computer parts store and should cost you no more than $10-15. They are easy to apply (right to the bottom) and does not require opening up the unit. Plus they are hidden underneath so there is no "eyesore" to look at. This should also help out those that have FC7 and FC9 units who are also experiencing the same problem. Good Luck!

I have to agree - Sound system is great but the DVD player will not work. Worked for awhile. Now "Standby" stays lit up - will not let you put a DVD in, won't release the DVD - have to unplug it just to get it to release the "Standby" message. Once you use function to take you to DVD the "Standby" message appears again and it will not let you do a thing. We have all the other componets for this system - now what????

The Sony Dream System DAV-FC8 is horrible. Sound is okay but DVD player is an absolute nightmare. At first, couldn't get DVDs to play and thought it was faulty movies we rented, so we purchased new movies--still wouldn't play half the time. Then the movies wouldn't eject and we couldn't load any others. Now the DVD player won't play at all and the Standby light stays on and you have to unplug the player so that the motor doesn't continuously run. Sony's answer--call for service or buy another DVD player (what are we supposed to do with the rest of the system?). No more Sony products for us!!!
