Reviewed by Tim in Atlanta on 06-03-2004These HT-SK5 systems have a design flaw that prevents proper use when installed with a dolby digital optical cable. Specifically, when changing channels on a hi-def tuner, the sound signal is lost and is altered to white noise (static). From what I have been told by samsung reps, ALL Samsungs in current production have this flaw. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by mad_esquire on 03-02-2004 The HT-SK5 is a lemon - don't buy it. Although the sound quality is great, the audio doesn't match the video when you're using a digital input, like digital HDTV. So, the lips don't match the words on any digital stations. It made it impossible to watch any HDTV programming, which essentially was why I bought it. The problem was hard to pinpoint at first, because most cable stations, even from a "digital" box don't have this problem. It's only when you get into the digital stations like HD stations that you encounter the problem. After 3 months of dealing with Samsung's poor technical support, including shipping the product back to Samsung, I learned from Samsung that they can't fix the problem, and they don't have a replacement product that would work better. The only thing more frustrating than the audio sync problem was Samsung's awful technical support. The staff was poorly educated about their own products, they never returned calls or e-mail like they promised, and seemed to have no concern for their customers. Don't waste your money - in fact, Samsung treated me so poorly, I can't recommend buying any Samsung products. Rating: ![]() Reviewed by Ryan Stanford on 02-08-2004 Just bought and installed this Samsung HT-SK5 model. Had been looking at others (Sony and Panasonic), but this was on sale for comparable price. Pluses: 1. Looks good (I prefer the darker components), 2. Easy set up (everything colour coded, easy to follow instructions). 3. Sounds great! 4. Fairly compact (compared to Sony model I was considering). 5. Better speakers (selling factor for me). 6. Disc changer (replaced the DVD and CD players). 7. On sale ($100 instant rebate). *Note - I'm very inexperienced and don't have much experience with Home Theater Systems to compare to. Just giving a newbies impression. In the back of my head I knew that I could get a better setup. I just wanted to bring a system home. When I got it home and watched a couple of DVD movies and listened to some music I started to like what I see and hear, but I still was not sure if this was the right product I was looking for. For two weeks since I was still not quit impressed with it. I then went to different stores and took time testing other different DVD Home Theater systems i.e Sony Dream System, Panasonic and more. Guess what after all that testing I find these to be excellent in it's class. For the price you cant go wrong with it. Only draw back is the DVD driven menu is poorly designed but the picture and sound quality makes up for it. Rating: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
