Reviewed by Matt on 02-14-2007 I bought my Onkyo HT-S590 system at Circuit City as an open box item. I payed $260. I think that the system sounds incredible. It really brings my movies to life and it was really easy to set up as well. All the cables are color coded for those who are into that sort of thing, all you who scoff at this should bow your heads to the simple fact that when you add up all the cables behind any decent AV system things inevitably get confusing. Having all the speakers color coded makes it easy to set up and keep things organized.
The sound from the system is nice and clean. The speakers supplied with the system will not rock your world. However, they are sufficiently small to use in a smaller room without taking over like Nazis running over the French. What they will do is bring your movies and music to life quite nicely. The simple intuitive interface allows you to adjust the speakers quite effectively for maximum sound efficiency.
The supplied subwoofer is not the loudest I've heard, but it is sufficient to supply the lows for any normal person. If you're not normal then look for a powered subwoofer that accepts line level imputs or just get a signal modifier from RadioShack and do it that way. For my needs it is sufficient.
I used the one optical port to attach my PS2 and now the games are in full surround sound. This alone makes it worthwhile.
The system is a nice silver/aluminum color and it seems to resist scratching quite nicely. The display is bright enough to read comfortably, and dimmable (for watching movies in the dark:).
Overall I'd rate this as a great value. I priced similar systems from Sony and Pioneer and they were over $600 to get essentially the same product.
I like the fact that it is very easy to operate, the buttons have a nice click to them and the volume knob is damped just right to get the perfect sound level.
The included remote is very comfortable to hold and works well within fifteen feet.
The built in tuner works amazingly well. It auto tunes for you! No more searching for a channel. It has thirty presets as well that only serve to enhance the ease of use.
I would recommend it for anyone who wants an inexpensive but powerful system.
Seeing as this device outputs 105 watts per channel it is very possible to put larger speakers on it and see good results. I tested this system with larger speakers that I had lying around and it sounded really good with them. (However, in my case I prefer the smaller space taken up by the included speakers.)
Well, I can't think of anything else to say so I'll end by saying that I'm one satisfied customer, I only hope that this system lasts for a really long time.
(My uncle has had an Onkyo system for thirty years and it still works great!)
