Reviewed by J M Pilley on 08-14-2004 For the Price (I paid $79.00 at a discount electronics store), I think this is a decent system. It is certainly no match for the many great, high-end systems out there but, For-The-Price, you get a DVD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, J-PEG, and MP3 Compatible Player, 5.1 Surround System with 5 speakers and a subwoofer. What it has that many Bargain-Basement players doesn't have is an AM-FM Tuner. This allows it to replace a mediocre component ("menagerie") in a kids room, a spare room, guest room, etc. with one decent unit that can unclutter the entertainment area of the room. No, it doesn't have a 5-disc changer or 1500 watts of power. That isn't what this unit is about. It works well, handles basic audio/visual playback and it's CHEAP.
The Norcent DP1950 also has a 2 year warranty. That is a bonus when many consumer electronics have much less of a warranty period. The speakers are small-ish and there are no 'front' or 'rear' or 'center' speaker distinctions - all 5 are identical. Despite this, they sound decent. The sub-woofer might not make you think there is actually a convoy of HumVees coming through your room, but the experience of 6-channel hi-fi sound is certainly light-years ahead of plain-jane stereo. I would highly recommend this unit for the service I have described. Rating:
