Toshiba D-R1
Product Rating
Recording to DVD offers huge advantages over tape, in picture and sound quality, durability, and convenience. Toshiba's D-R1 is like having a top-notch progressive-scan DVD player and a VCR-on-steroids in a single user-friendly component. Toshiba's Multi Drive design lets you choose the best disc for the job, whether it's rewriteable DVD-RW or DVD-RAM™, or write-once DVD-R. Using a standard blank DVD-R disc, you can record anywhere from one hour (highest quality) to six hours (VHS quality). For "time-shifting" your favorite shows, you'll love the features and flexibility of DVD-RAM (RAM stands for "Random Access Memory"). It's the only recordable format that keeps precise track of recorded and blank sections on each disc, so you can always jump directly to any spot and begin playing or recording right away. You can arrange recorded programs for playback in any order you choose. The "Time Slip" feature lets you watch the beginning of a recorded program while the show is finishing recording! It also allows you to record a program while watching another one that you've previously recorded. Try doing that with a VCR! Write-once DVD-R is the medium of choice for archiving home movies. Owners of digital camcorders can make a single-cable IEEE 1394 connection to the D-R1 and make crystal-clear DVD copies of videos for easy playback, or for sharing with friends and family (DVD-R is compatible with nearly all DVD players and computer DVD drives). No more worries about tapes failing, fading, or wearing out! When recording, the D-R1 automatically grabs the first video frame and displays it as a chapter mark. You can also choose to create your own chapter marks with custom screen captures or "thumbnails."

Reviewed by T Houlton on 03-23-2008 Not a very good DVD recorder. The main problem is that finding compatible DVD's are impossible. What use is it if you can only look at it and not use it? Rating:
