The Liteon LVW5001 worries me & So far it's user friendly, I can use the unit for viewing VSH tape, cable, and much more but you much install a DVD disk to take advanage of all the feature. The best feature is the Easy Guider. The unit has been recording well and playback is fine but I have only used the disk that came with it, after reading a couple of reviews, I not sure if I made the right move. My main worry right now happens regardless if you are just in the playback or recording mode the unit runs hot. Having electronics background I would say very HOT. Does any one know if this is normal? I did contact the office but I had to leave a phone message I hope they return my call soon. I really like it but I would rather get rid of the lemon if thats the case. Can some one provide some feedback. Thanks.

This is the second Liteon 5001 I have had since Nov 2003. The first one stopped playing randomly after recording a few shows. So returned it for another one. Purchased it at Compusa with their ridiculous 2 week return policy. Purchased the second one around xmas and didn't test it enough I guess. Now I'm stuck with it. The recorder seems to record fine till you playback the DVD. The problem is in the recording itself. The DVDs you create appear to stop playing at random spots. They also stop playing at the same spots on any DVD player I try them in. I've tried about 5 different types of DVDs now and same problem. I upgraded the firmware to the latest version basically the day I bought the thing. All their tech support can tell me is look at this hidden web site and buy this exact media from this manufacturer. Good luck doing that. I did find a TDK DVD +RW that made the list. Recorded something last night but haven't had time to play it back. I don't understand how they can sell something that wasn't fully tested. I mean the recorder would skip using their own +RW that came with the recorder. The second recorder's +RW that came with it got ruined and became invalid after I put it into the recorder. The tech support people act cocky and make it sound like I'm doing something wrong. But I want my money back. Unless the recording I did last night actually works for a change. Made about 15 DVD's of camcorder tapes only to find out they got stuck when I played them back. Thats a lot of time and effort and wear on my camcorder not to get a good recording. I find it unacceptable that they blame it on the media.

Well, this is a bit difficult. The recorder, when it works, is just great. BUT, you can only use certain media with it. I tried Maxell DVD+RW and it destroyed the disks. I called customer support and they said use SONY (and a few others). Using SONY DVD+RW seems to record OK, unless you record in 4 hour mode. That speed just seems to destroy everything on the disk. You are forced to use 6 hour or 2 hour mode. The 6 hour mode is a bit grainy, the 2 hour is a beautiful picture, but you just can't get that much on the disk. Can't figure out why the 4 hour blows the disks. Customer support is not bad. The worst part is the hold time. Expect to hold 1+ hour before they answer. They are open 24 hours a day, so maybe I just called in the wrong time. I'm still a bit nervous trusting important recordings to it because of the trouble with it wiping out so many disks.
