Onkyo DV-SP1000
Product Rating
Many say that the receiver is the heart of your home theater. That may be true, but it still needs movies and music pumped to it, and there's no better delivery mechanism than the rugged DV-SP1000. One look at this DVD player and you'll know it's built to last. Vibrations are kept to a minimum, with a sturdy chassis and loading mechanism specifically designed for the smoothest delivery of your movies and music. “Universal” takes on an entirely new dimension, with the DV-SP1000 not only providing you with DVD Audio/Video and Super Audio CD playback, but also analog and pure digital reproduction. The inclusion of HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) and i.LINK (IEEE1394) deliver high-quality movies and multi-channel music.

Reviewed by RULEO BANTUGAN on 05-07-2005 I always think spending 2 grands for a dvd player is outright ridiculous. After researching and drooling over Onkyo DV-SP1000, I decided to jump into the bandwagon. I place an order online resulting to a sleepless night. "Do I really need this expensive unit?" Got it from Onecall for $1400 (they gave me free shipping to keep me from cancelling the order the next day).
All that feeling went away as soon as I received the item and open the box. I thought I was picking up a high-end receiver. The player weighs a ton and built like a rock. Faceplate is simple yet very attractive. Side panel has a bar type stabilizer that reminds me of a bodybuilders ribcage. Extermely rock-solid construction.
Setting-up is a breeze. Its must be engineered with end-users in mind. OSD menu is easy to navigate. Comes with an intuitive backlit remote..sturdy and classy too. Denon can learn a few lessons on how to make decent remotes.
DVD-Audio and SACD performance is mindblowing. I tested Eagles' Hotel California(DVD-A), Winelight(DVD-A), Roxy Music Avalon(SACD) and Beck Sea Change(SACD). They all sound very clean and crystal. The player even have an extra L & R surround channel for 7.1 channel setup.
On the video side this unit did not disappoint.
I connected the player to my Sony RP HDTV using HDMI-to-DVI Monster cable (got it half price in ebay). Setting the resolution to 1920x1080i 16:9 60Hz, the picture is nothing short of amazing. This is on default picture settings. Colors are vibrant and images are life-like. No jagged edges seen. The player uses O-plus Flexscale video scaling. (Denon 3910 Faroudja video scaler but picture quality looks washed out). It also features dedicated connections for interlaced and progressive scan output.
Bonus features (that you always enjoy in cheap dvd players but missing in high-end units) includes ability to remember point of last disc played, a screen saver, and ability to play virtually any disc format. I threw in my back-up movies recorded in DVD+R/RW DVD-R/RW. They all played perfect.
I called customer support one time for a technical assistance, and was very pleased. Best of all you get 1 year parts / 1 year labor -in home service warranty if bought from authorized dealer.
I'm rate this player 5 out 5 for its superb and unsurpassed audio and video performance. Rating:
