Reviewed by Butch on 09-16-2005 This player does audio very well. Video is also up there with the very best I've seen.
This is not a user friendly machine. You better know something about PCM, bitstreams and the difference between analog and digital if you plan on having success in wringing its best performance.
You need to study Chinenglish before attempting to read the user manual.
It is absolutely the worst written user guide in existence. I once thought
that the Marantz SR19 receiver's guide was bad. This one takes the prize
This player is equipped with an HDMI output. My guess is that most people who buy this unit are going to want to use this connection in order to take full advantage of video upconversion. You'll find the cheapest set of composite A/V cables you've ever seen in your life inside the box, but you will not see an HDMI cable.
It is a tweakers dream come true. Adjustments for just about everything
are included.
Many web sites, including this one, claim that lip synch adjustment is possible. It is NOT! The unit does do bass management on a very limited basis. You can specify speaker size. Not really what I'd call management.
If you don't mind adjusting settings buried in endless on-screen menus
everytime you change disc formats - then this player will make you very happy. It's worth the price. I currently own a Pioneer DVD-444 which earned an 8.7 out of 10 rating with 45 end user reviews. This unit is so superior to that Pioneer that the scale would have to be tripled in order
to rate it on the same scale.
If this player was a little more user friendly, I'd give it a higher rating.
If it had a backlit remote - I'd give it a higher rating.
If I did not have to visit the setup menu every time I move from DVD-video
to SACD - I'd give it a higher rating.
If it had true bass management - I'd give it a higher rating.
Marantz's web site say's that lip synch is adjustable. If it were - I'd give it a higher rating.
Based on pure performance - I give it a 4.5
Based on ease of use - I give it a 2
Based on the user guide's ability to tell you what you need to know in order to take full advantage of the players features - I give it a 0
Last thing. I'm watching a DVD in a darkened room. PUT A DAMNED LIGHT IN
THE REMOTE CONTROLL!!! For Pete's sake, This is a thousand dollar player.
Add 5 bucks and put a light in the remote. Better yet, Throw a harmony programmable in the box. Rating:
