Reviewed by Jeff Chandler on 10-09-2004 Pros: Good array of features, especially equalizer functions.
Cons: Buttons are small and hard to identify.
I bought this unit to replace my OEM stereo in a BMW 525i. BMW originally installed an Alpine AM/FM Cassette. The original equipment had NO features, and only marginal sound.
The unit was installed by the dealer in less than 15 minutes. There were no funky wires, adapters, or custom junk to complicate the installation. I thought the installer would have problems, because my BMW has at least eight speakers. Regardless, it was quick and easy.
The Pioneer DEH-1600 had every feature I wanted. For the radio, it has 3 different FM bands, so each of my teenagers can have their own presets without messing with my favorites.
I would like to have had some bigger buttons. As I think about it though, I must consider that there really isn't much place for bigger buttons. The two most prominent buttons are the Volume Up & Down buttons. The ON/OFF function is not readily apparent to anyone. If someone is to drive your car, they'll never figure out how to turn it on. Bottom line, if you haven't read the manual, you won't figure out the button scheme.
The equalizer function allows good accomodation for my particular car. I was able to boost the high-end to accomodate for an extremely rich lower-end speaker set up. Out of the box, the stereo made the car rumble and vibrate, and it just wasn't good sound. A little work allowed me to tailor the system to create a balanced sound.
The search function of the tuner is a bit awkward and takes some time getting used to. I liked the "scan" feature of my old radio, and this system doesn't have it. Also, the tuner seems slightly weaker than my old system. I live in Colorado, and driving through the mountains sometimes leaves my without a station (except country - you can always find a redneck station anywhere). Nonetheless, in town, the reception is acceptable.
The faceplate is detachable. I'm not certain I will ever use that function, as my odds of losing the faceplate are greater than the odds of someone else stealing my stereo.
I recommend the stereo as a moderately priced, solid sound system. There aren't a lot of superfluous features to confuse you and render the system virtually unusable. It has everything you need to play quality music. For a hundred bucks, it's hard to go wrong. Rating:
