Features of the Panasonic CQ-DFX403U include:
- Rotary Knob: One large knob gives you full control with click-stop precision over all sound functions: volume, bass/treble, balance/fader, and subwoofer. Press to select an item, then turn to adjust the level - it's easy to get the hang of. To the knob's left is the power switch, which also selects your listening source. Above it is the mute/attenuation switch. For easy driver access, these and other controls are ergonomically arranged, with the most common functions grouped on the left.
- Black Chrome Panel with Blue Display: With its white letters on an ocean blue background, the chic black chrome panel presents highly readable information in a classy design.
- Sirius Satellite Radio Ready: Sirius satellite radio provides 100 channels of music, news, entertainment and sports programming right to your car. Select 2003 CD Receivers are Sirius Satellite Radio ready. To pick up Sirius radio, the Satellite Receiver (CR-SRT100) must be connected to the CD Changer input on a Sirius-ready head unit. Of course, a Sirius Antenna (CL-SRA100) must also be hooked up to the receiver. With a dual CD changer selector (CA-CD55, optional) you can connect a Sirius receiver and a CD changer at the same time, and operate both from the head unit.
- Slim Fit Mount Design: Thanks to the Flat panel design, the unit can be mounted flush in many cars. This can achieve a custom-finished look without excessive protrusions that you might expect to see in an expensive sports car.
- 4-Channel High Power Amp: The high-power amplifier built into Panasonic CD Receivers deliver up to 240 watts of total power, capable of driving four speakers at high volume. Specially designed electronics ensure deep, dynamic bass and sound signal purity with a minimum of interference and cross talk.
- Multi-Stage Noise Shaping 1-Bit DAC: Panasonic uses a single bit to convert digital signals to analog. This technology not only helps prevent sound distortion, it actually moves digital noise out of the audible range. The original CD signal is requantized and is "shaped" to make noise inaudible. PWM (pulse width modulation) then precisely rebuilds the analog waveform.
- One-Chip Digital Circuit: This first-in-the-industry technology handles the signal processing tasks of three chips: 1-bit D/A conversion with multi-stage noise shaping, and optical servo control. The result is dynamic sound quality and reliable performance.
- 3-Beam Hologram Pickup: Accurate reading of digital data from the tracks of a CD involves an intricate and complex system of many opto-electronic parts. Panasonic has successfully integrated all these parts in a single hologram, delivering high performance reliably in all its CD models.
- Day and Night Design: Automatically adjusts to day and night. In daytime, the metallic-coated face panel presents a sleek, high-tech look; at night the panel glows a cool shade of blue.
- Super Bright Display with Dimmer: Most CD models feature a colorful display for added convenience and visual impact. The display provides high visibility even in daylight, thanks to its CFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) backlight, and the 3-step dimmer allows you to adjust brightness to match day and night driving conditions.
- Spectrum Analyzer: With its dynamic blue gradation, the spectrum analyzer gives you a visual indication of actual musical energy. You can change the display pattern to suit your mood or the music by selecting one of 11 modes, or you can choose to turn it off altogether.
- Level Meters: You can choose from among five visually striking moving patterns to match the dynamics of your music.
- Open Face CD Access: The CD slot is easily accessible, hidden behind the front panel. The clean, open-face design allows for the large alphanumeric display.
- Removable Faceplate: If you remove the front control panel when you leave your car, a warning light flashes to indicate the panel has been removed.
- Wireless Remote Control: Back-seat passengers can control the major functions of the dashboard unit with this convenient, card-style remote.

Reviewed by Joe on 03-25-2004 Having just bought a used vehicle (I never checked the factory cd player), I was in need of a car cd player. I stopped by to see my old boss at his retail store where I used to work, eyed up the car stereos, got some basic info from Dennis (price and power), and almost instantly picked this
one. I'm very familiar with Panasonic products and consider them the best on the market. Their legendary 1200 turntables never die! I once had a
Technics tape deck that went through my abuse, and it kept on running. I knew from the beginning my purchase would be a Panasonic. I used to install these things for a living, so in about 45 minutes I had tunes!! Setting the clock was easy, and I only had to glance at the owner's manual twice to check out some other features. I'm not interested in showy or useless features, just sound quality, power output, and ease of operation for main features, like volume, eq, track change, search, etc. I've had this unit for less than a week and I'm already very comfortable with it. The sound quality is actually very good considering I'm not running any outboard amps. My factory speakers now sound even better, but that is usually the case when factory head units are replaced. I'm not used to a fold-down motorized face to access the cd insert slot, but it's no problem. The display is easy to read, looks good, is bright in the day, and shows a lot of useful info. I paid $149 and bought the harness and install kit as additional items, because after working in the industry, you learn there's only one way to install the thing.....the right way. I'm happy with my purchase and I'm sure I'll have many years of great listening with my Panasonic. (My last competition-level system was all Panasonic, and you can't lose when you buy their products). Rating:
