This is not the first time I have written a review on the AVR-130 as I feel so strongly about just how good this unit is. In my opinion this is the best receiver on the market if your criteria is mainly music with the ability to play DVD 5.1 movies very well and don't need component video switching capabilities. I hook straight into my TV from the DVD via component. My system includes, the way under priced and very, very good sounding Yamaha NS-555 towers as main speakers. The JVC XV-n50 DVD player (it matches perfectly and sounds much better than $99). A pair of Athena BS-1's as surrounds and Sony full range center speaker. The AVR-130 performs like a much more expensive receiver. Speaker setup allows you to calibrate everything to perfection. DVD digital and DTS playback is truly awesome. Vocal dialogue is always clear and on point. Whether its bullets whizzing by or a door creaking open the AVR-130 performs flawlessly! But make no mistake, where this receiver shines and I do mean shines, it's music playback. Some would think that only 50 watts per two channel playback would not impress. Don't be fooled!!! These are high current amps that perform more like 150 watts...seriously! Every CD from 'Seal' to the smooth sounds of jazz pianist Brian Culbertson and the funky grooves of Craig David are all recreated with wonderful musicality! I listen to everything from funk to country, and believe me this receiver does them all justice. No other receivers come close to the refined beauty of Silver Anniversary Series by HK. But sounding as good as it looks is what makes the AVR-130 a steal of an amp. If you definitely need component switching then the AVR-130 is not for you. The remote definitely needs redesigning. But if you want a minimal, clean hookup with great sound on both movies and music look no further.

The one queston you should ask yourself when buying a reciever is...'what do I really need'? In my case the HK AVR 130 was just what I needed. Extremely musical and precise on surround sound material. It's solid build quality and drop dead looks are an extra bonus. Don't let that wattage fool you, this receiver packs the punch of a heavyweight! If you are in the market for a low priced 5.1 surround sound receiver that sounds remarkably good when music is played through it...STOP!!! I strongly recommend that you give this amp a listen. Your ears and your checkbook won't be sorry. The remote isn't the best and the advanced speaker setup takes a little consentration, but it's well worth the effort.
